Paroxetine
Paroxetine is a very strong chemical compound that belongs to the group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. This compound is an antidepressant that was introduced to the market in 1990. It is used to treat reduced wellbeing and anxiety that affects the lack of sexual desire. Although there may be indications for the use of the preparation, it is not always possible to take it.
Paroxetine - action
The action of paroxetine reduces depressive states, which may be caused by lowering the level of biogenic monoamines, i.e. noradrenaline, or changing the sensitivity of noradrenaline and serotonin receptors. As it turns out, paroxetine is one of the strongest compounds with this effect. It significantly prolongs the time of serotonin action in the synaptic fissure, which intensifies and prolongs the effect of stimulation. The final effect of paroxetine is an improvement in mood, which appears after several days of systematic administration of the drug.
Like all medicines, paroxetine can also cause side effects. The most frequently mentioned and observed patients include: weakened libido, nausea, dry mouth, excessive sweating, lack of appetite, drowsiness, frequent headaches, shallow sleep, vomiting, anxiety, depressive states, elevated prolactin level, decreased seizure threshold, agitation. Sometimes also muscle stiffness, autonomic instability, hyperthermia or clonic muscle convulsions occur.
Paroxetine - contraindications
Paroxetine cannot be combined with serotonergic drugs as symptoms associated with serotonin syndrome may develop. During the administration of paroxetine, strict control and the utmost caution during treatment is necessary. Do not administer the drug if there is a risk of hypersensitivity to the preparation component. Paroxetine must not be combined with MAO inhibitors. Treatment with paroxetine should only be initiated 2 weeks after the end of irreversible MAO inhibitors or at least 24 hours after the end of reversible MAO inhibitors.
