Testosterone is the main and most important sex hormone, which plays a primary role in shaping the nervous and hormonal systems. It is a necessary chemical compound that is responsible for the proper maintenance of the libido. With age, the level of sexual interest decreases and the quality of erection deteriorates. For this purpose, it is recommended to supplement the hormone with dietary supplements or prescription drugs.
Testosterone is a basic androgenic hormone that is produced by negative feedback mechanisms. Nearly 97% of testosterone is protein-bound. The concentration of total testosterone in adult male serum ranges from 9-28 nmol/l.
Effects of testosterone on the functioning of the sexual system
Sex hormone testosterone is used in medicine, mainly in the form of esters with organic acids: acetic or propionic. Most often it is administered parenterally, i.e. intramuscularly, because it is not absorbed directly from the gastrointestinal tract. Testosterone is used in the form of a microcrystalline water suspension. Subcutaneous administration of testosterone is associated with maintenance of normal genital function and stimulation of sexual function. In addition, testosterone is responsible for the formation of sperm and increased desire.

Testosterone therapy is for men who have underdeveloped genital organs, reduced potency and decreased libido. Testosterone esters, i.e. heptanoate, propionate and cypionate, are used intramuscularly. Testosterone can be administered in the form of a gel, it is absorbed through the skin from 9 to 14% of the administered dose, plasma concentration increases slowly, reaching balance before the second day. Testosterone is available in the form of preparations for oral use, i.e. in the form of capsules. Agents with testosterone in composition may not be administered to boys under 15 years of age. Each dose of testosterone is administered individually, following doctor's recommendations, which determine the level of the disorder or type of key therapy. The use of testosterone as a dopant can cause serious and dangerous side effects.
Testosterone therapy and overdose
Substitution therapy can have a toxic effect on the body. For this purpose, it is recommended to administer the hormone as carefully as possible. An overdose can cause acne, menstrual disorders and lack of ovulation in women. Sometimes it is also possible to retain water in the body and swell the body. In the case of men, overdose is manifested by muscle pains, headaches, nausea, blood clotting disorders.
